    Seizing the business opportunities of MyData service delivery network: Transforming the Business Models for Health Insurance Companies

    Purpose: This paper discusses how personal data-driven service delivery networks based on MyData phenomenon may impact and transform the business models and offer new kinds of business opportunities especially for health insurance business Design/Methodology/Approach: This research is a case study / empirical Findings: This study demonstrates how health insurance organizations are heading towards acting as active members of human centric, collaborative service delivery networks. The biggest opportunity transformation from transaction based to service-based businesss Research limitations/implications:  As the use of personal data is still a paradigm in Europe, the results of this study address the potential use and implications and cannot be validated through large-scale empirical studies. Practical implications: This research highlights how companies should build adaptable service architecture that are easily connected or disconnected from the other organizations in their business ecosystems in order to allow smooth data usage and sharing.     Integrating Agile Practices with a Medical Device SDLC.

    The rate at which agile software development practices are being adopted is growing rapidly. Agile software development practices and methodologies appear to offer the silver bullet which can solve the problems associated with following plan driven software development lifecycles. Agile software development practices offer the possibility of achieving lower development costs, increased efficiency and improved software quality. However, there is currently a low rate of publicly available information that suggests there is widespread adoption of agile practices within the medical device software domain. This is largely due to the fact that software developed for medical devices includes challenges not faced when developing non safety critical software. As a result of these challenges, medical device software is typically developed using plan driven software development lifecycles. However, such lifecycles are quite rigid and cannot accommodate changes easily. Previous research has revealed that medical device software development projects can benefit from adopting agile practices whilst still maintaining the discipline associated with following plan driven development lifecycles.     Towards digital counselling in primary care management of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: a qualitative descriptive study in Finnish primary care

    Digital counselling may improve patients’ health outcomes, when eHealth solutions are accessible and tailored to the patients’ needs, which is especially important for people with chronic and long-term conditions such as knee osteoarthritis. This study aims to identify patients’ eHealth needs to improve the quality of digital counselling in a primary care management of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. A qualitative study was used to collect patients’ eHealth needs through semi-structured interviews in a single outpatient clinic in Finland between August 2020 and November 2020. The data was analyzed using both deductive and inductive content analysis approaches. The study was reported in accordance with the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative research checklist to improve the transparency of the study. Analysis of the data revealed five main categories to be considered when implementing digital counselling in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: background factors (functional impairments, health literacy, digital literacy, cost-related access barriers), resources (digital methods and materials), sufficiency (knee osteoarthritis-related knowledge and skills), implementation (simplicity, trust, patient-centeredness), and benefits (self-care capabilities, confidence). According to our findings, both health and digital literacy seems to be important contributors to the adoption of digital counselling in a primary care management of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. New eHealth solutions should not replace the first visit in the outpatient clinic. Instead, the use of eHealth solutions should be based on the first visit, during which a trusting relationship between patients and healthcare providers is established. In future, the level of health and digital literacy in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis should be taken account

    Complementors’ coopetition-based business models in multiplatform ecosystems

    Multi-platform ecosystems (MPEs) are comprised of multiple platforms integrated to create and capture value together. The collective value creation and capture within MPEs gives rise to coopetion, which impacts the business model configurations for both incumbents and entrants that provide complementary offerings. Previous platform research has predominantly focused on incumbent platforms. This research focuses on the question of how entrant platforms configure their business models to endorse coopetition with incumbents in the MPEs within the healthcare sector. Our findings indicate that entrant platforms configure their business models to integrate into MPEs and need to flexibly align with the complementarity requirements set by the incumbents, combine inter- and intra-platform collaborative dynamics in their business models, and build on coopetition with incumbents.

    Expectations to data : Perspectives of service providers and users of future health and wellness services

    The healthcare and wellness sector currently attempts to provide more proactive service models with data-driven solutions. This study examines the expectations and values related to personal data i.e. data valences from the perspective of service providers and individual users. The study is based on the analysis of extensive empirical material collected through interviews and a collaborative workshop. The data was collected in one cultural context, Finland. The results suggest that the potential service providers and users have similar expectations regarding self-evidence of data while the main differences concern the expectations of transparency. The results of the study propose some basic requirements for the development of personalised data-driven services in future. The study suggests that basic requirements for the development of future data driven services concern expectations to usable data visualisations, data as a motivator, data accuracy and data transparency. Even though there are varying expectations to personal health data and even some concerns, it can be seen that here different ecosystem actors primarily perceived the wider use of personal health and wellness data as a positive trend. It can be concluded that collaborative personal data-driven service ecosystems are an integral part of development towards proactive service models in healthcare.Peer reviewe

    Parental Experiences of the Pediatric Day Surgery Pathway and the Needs for a Digital Gaming Solution : Qualitative Study

    Background: The parents of hospitalized children are often dissatisfied with waiting times, fasting, discharge criteria, postoperative pain relief, and postoperative guidance. Parents' experiences help care providers to provide effective, family-centered care that responds to parents' needs throughout the day surgery pathway. Objective: The objective of our study was to describe parental experiences of the pediatric day surgery pathway and the needs for a digital gaming solution in order to facilitate the digitalization of these pathways. Methods: This was a descriptive qualitative study. The participants (N=31) were parents whose children were admitted to the hospital for the day surgical treatments or magnetic resonance imaging. The data were collected through an unstructured, open-ended questionnaire; an inductive content analysis was conducted to analyze the qualitative data. Reporting of the study findings adheres to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. Results: Parental experiences of the children's day surgery pathway included 3 main categories: (1) needs for parental guidance, (2) needs for support, and (3) child involved in his or her own pathway (eg, consideration of an individual child and preparation of child for treatment). The needs for a digital gaming solution were identified as 1 main category-the digital gaming solution for children and families to support care. This main category included 3 upper categories: (1) preparing children and families for the day surgery via the solution, (2) gamification in the solution, and (3) connecting people through the solution. Conclusions: Parents need guidance and support for their children's day surgery care pathways. A digital gaming solution may be a relevant tool to support communication and to provide information on day surgeries Families are ready for and are open to digital gaming solutions that provide support and guidance and engage children in the day surgery pathways.Peer reviewe

    A gamified mobile health intervention for children in day surgery care : Protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Nursing Open published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Aims: To describe a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial which will evaluate the effectiveness of a gamified mobile health intervention for children in whole day surgery care. Design: A study protocol for a two-arm randomized controlled trial. Methods: Participants will be randomly assigned to the intervention group (N = 62), in which patients receive routine care and play a mobile game designed for children or the control group (N = 62), in which patients receive routine care, including a mobile phone application that supports parents during the care path. The primary outcome is children's pre-operative anxiety, while the secondary outcome measures included fear and postoperative pain, along with parental satisfaction and anxiety. Data collection started in August 2020. Results: The results of the ongoing randomized controlled trial will determine whether the developed gamified mobile health intervention can be recommended for hospital use, and whether it could be used to educate children about their surgical treatment to decrease anxiety.Peer reviewe

    Short-term effects of a digital patient journey solution on patient-reported outcomes and health care utilization in arthroplasty : a pragmatic randomized controlled trial

    Mobile health solutions for patient support have been proposed as promising and safe alternatives to usual care in adults undergoing primary total hip and knee arthroplasty. Studies of such applications, however, have produced conflicting results and only moderate- to low-quality evidence. This study aims to evaluate the short-term effects of a digital patient journey solution on patient-reported outcomes and health care utilization in patients undergoing total hip and knee arthroplasty using a pragmatic randomized controlled trial design. Randomly allocated patients in the control arm (n = 35, 64 ± 9 years) received usual care, while patients in the intervention arm (n = 34, 62 ± 11 years) received the digital patient journey solution in addition to usual care. The primary outcome was health-related quality of life as measured by the EuroQol EQ-5D-5L scale. Secondary outcomes included functional recovery, pain, self-efficacy, patient experience, adherence to fast-track protocol, and health care utilization. Participants were followed from a preoperative surgical visit until a postoperative follow-up visit at 6–12 weeks. The health-related quality of life, functional recovery, pain, patient experience, adherence to the fast-track protocol, and health care utilization did not differ between the arms. During the study, however, the self-efficacy to use digital health services (p=0.027) increased in the intervention arm. The use of the digital patient journey solution was not superior to usual care in terms of patient-reported outcomes and health care utilization. However, the solution improved the self-efficacy of patients to use digital health services, which may lead to greater demand for similar digital offerings as patient become more familiar with mobile health solutions.Peer reviewe

    Meaningful Big Data Integration For a Global COVID-19 Strategy

    Abstract With the rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the novel Meaningful Integration of Data Analytics and Services (MIDAS) platform quickly demonstrates its value, relevance and transferability to this new global crisis. The MIDAS platform enables the connection of a large number of isolated heterogeneous data sources, and combines rich datasets including open and social data, ingesting and preparing these for the application of analytics, monitoring and research tools. These platforms will assist public health author ities in: (i) better understanding the disease and its impact; (ii) monitoring the different aspects of the evolution of the pandemic across a diverse range of groups; (iii) contributing to improved resilience against the impacts of this global crisis; and (iv) enhancing preparedness for future public health emergencies. The model of governance and ethical review, incorporated and defined within MIDAS, also addresses the complex privacy and ethical issues that the developing pandemic has highlighted, allowing oversight and scrutiny of more and richer data sources by users of the system
